Dental scans – a digital prescription for devices and early decay detection
Many dentists now use digital scanners to create clear aligners for a straighter, healthier smile, making teeth easier to clean. These scanners are often under-used in practices, yet they could also support care homes when paired with mouth cameras and portable X-ray units for trained dental nurses. Digital technology is also improving veneers, making them more durable and affordable. However, cosmetic treatments aren’t suitable for everyone, and in some cases may harm long-term oral health if chosen for the wrong reasons.
These videos explore the possibilities of this rapidly developing field. You’ll find more on the Teeth4life YouTube channel.
Alongside advances in scanning technology and software, 3D printing has rapidly improved in both dental labs and clinics. This video highlights some of the new possibilities. With modern scanners, we can now produce exact replica dentures in a single print, offering greater accuracy and, ultimately, lower costs.
In 2024, I visited Ireland to see how an innovative dental therapist was providing replica dentures for care home residents. She has successfully fitted more than 200 full replica dentures with no adjustments needed. A similar service in the UK could be delivered by trained, self-employed dental nurses who visit care homes to support oral hygiene, apply protective varnish, and create replica dentures. However, the current 1984 Dental Act only reflects how dentures were made decades ago. Updating this legislation would allow nurses to deliver a greener, more affordable service, reducing both costs and visit requirements by up to 75%.
