SDF Varnish – Gentle Palliative Care for Teeth (and Gums)
Decay Away (Silver Diamine Fluoride, or SDF) is available through dental practices in most countries. It has been safely used in Japan for over 70 years to stop tooth decay, with no significant side effects reported.
More recent use suggests it may also support gum health in older adults. The treatment is quick, painless, and can be applied by trained dental nurses.
The potential benefits of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) in improving gum health among older adults have only recently been recognised. While large-scale clinical trials are currently lacking, this is not due to a lack of promise. SDF has been safely used for over 70 years, but as it cannot be patented, there is little commercial incentive to fund expensive research studies. Emerging observations suggest that improving oral health in this way may also help reduce the risk of complications such as pneumonia in care home residents.
